Sold Out

October 8, 2019

The October Virtual Showcase is now sold out. Thank you to everyone who signed up! This month’s recording will take place on the 23rd, with a November date TBA. Although the industry slows down around the holidays, it’s actually a great time to record a showcase. Agents have a bit more time to view the audition footage. So if you didn’t get a spot this month, no worries! We have a growing wait list for the next round of registration. Sign up now at chicagovirtualshowcase@gmail.com.

The Next Showcase Date Is...

September 27, 2019

If you’ve been keeping up with this news feed, you know that our September Virtual Showcase posted this week. And that means it’s time to start thinking about next month! Our next recording date for the Chicago Virtual Showcase is October 23, 2019.

The Showcase is a great way for Chicago actors to get in front of industry professionals without spending a fortune on headshot/resume mailings. This opportunity is not recommended for beginners - on-camera experience is definitely advised in order to have a successful Showcase.

In other news, I am out of town for the next few days. Tapings are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, October 2. Since I had to leave town before the end of the month, I’m extending the September discount into October. Mention this post to receive $5 off a half hour session or $10 off an hour long session. This discount is good through October 15th!

What Makes a Successful Showcase Recording?

September 22, 2019

It’s editing day! Friday I recorded the September Virtual Showcase with six actors - a good handful for agents to review. I hope to have the preview link available tomorrow or Tuesday.

So what makes a successful Virtual Showcase recording? Here are some things to consider:

Choose your material wisely. Scenes tend to work better in this format. It should be age-appropriate and fit your type. Is there a show from the last few years that you really love and connect with? Are there characters in it that you could legitimately can see yourself playing? If it’s a television show, chances are you can find an episode online from which to pull a scene. If it’s a play, you can likely get a copy of the script. Finding a scene with some comedy in it that makes your audience laugh certainly doesn’t hurt, either.

Spend some serious quality time on your commercial copy. Far too often actors dedicate the bulk of their rehearsal time on their scene or monologue while assuming they can just wing it when it comes to the commercials. After all, it’s just a couple of lines, right? Wrong. The less lines you have to say something, the more difficult it can be to effectively tell the story. Yes, as an actor your job is still to tell a story, even when that story is in the form of a selling a product. And you only have a few seconds to do it. Auditioning for commercials is an art form. Commercials are typically the first auditions an agent will send a new talent on, so honing these skills is key when preparing your Showcase recording.

Don’t rehearse your interview answer. It shows every time. You definitely want to prepare some things you’d like to talk about, but don’t rehearse this like a script. Your interview should feel relaxed and natural. Industry professionals want to get a sense of who you are as a person and what you might be like when you walk into an audition room. Many actors, especially those just starting out in the business, try to portray themselves in a way they think the agent or director wants to see. They’ll talk about things they think an industry audience wants to hear ("I’m really dedicated to acting, it’s my passion.”) Well, obviously. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here. Instead, think about hobbies or interests that separate you from the rest. (“I was runner-up in a hot dog eating contest.” “I’m fluent in three different languages.”) Okay, now it’s getting interesting.

Second City Training Center: Teen Workshop!

August 13, 2017

It was a small but mighty group today at the Second City Training Center, for another round of the Coaching and Virtual Showcase workshop for teens. Students took turns practicing on camera with monologues and commercial copy, as well as rehearsing their slates to make that memorable - and positive - first impression. They began to realize that commercials, even though they are only a few seconds long, are much harder than they seem! For most of the students, it was their first time seeing themselves on camera - something every actor should get comfortable with. What a fun day!

Next week they will come in to record their Virtual Showcase, and a link will be sent to all the agents, casting directors, producers, etc. in the Chicago area. I can't wait to see how much more confident they become after having a few days with the material at home and applying all their notes from today. Woot woot!

Matt Miller's Virtual Showcase

June 2, 2017

Matt Miller's Virtual Showcase has posted! For those of you wondering, Matt is a Chicago-based director who runs a showcase for actors that he then posts online for agents and casting directors to check out. It's a great way for industry professionals to get to know the talent - both new and established - here in the Chicago community. I've been fortunate enough to edit the recent showcases, and it's fun to see all the amazing talent that exists in this city.

Update (September 18, 2019): The Virtual Showcase is still going strong, and it’s exciting that so many actors have booked jobs, been called in for auditions and signed with agents - all from being seen in the showcase! One big change: it’s no longer called Matt Miller’s Virtual Showcase. He’s still the creator/owner and very much a part of the process, but it’s now referred to as the Chicago Virtual Showcase. I am officially the session runner and editor for the showcase, and am happy to answer any questions you might have. Check out the showcase website or visit the Virtual Showcase tab from the menu on this site.
